Road America joins in for a day of fun and exercise

Healthy employees are important to us at Road America, so we decided to participate again this year in the Mercedes-Benz Corporate 5K run in Miami, Florida.  And what a great turnout it was.  Not only did 70 of our Road-America team members run but even more showed up to root for their co-workers.

Promoting health and well being with events like this boosts employee morale and team spirit.  Studies show healthy workers who participate in exercise regimens and healthful lifestyles have lower tardiness and absenteeism, fewer injuries, improved productivity and lower health care costs.  The benefits for both companies and their employees are significant, and these events are all about creating awareness of the positive benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

“We like to participate in these events to bring our employees together for a fun and healthy day.  It’s an opportunity to motivate and support our team members to work together in a competitive atmosphere, which is what we promote in the workplace to be the best in the industry, in all divisions of our company,” said Dennis Fantis, President – Road America.

Of the 70 runners on our team, Cintia Borgese came in first place for the women’s division of Team Road America at just under 33 minutes.  Michael ter Mors of Kompani Group, who was invited to join the team as an extended member, arrived at the finish line in just under 23 minutes, the top speed in the men’s division.   Congratulations Cintia and Michael on a race well run!

Road America Receives 2012 American Business Award

Miami, FL – October 3, 2012 – Road America was awarded the Silver Stevie Award for Information Technology Department of the Year in the 2012 American Business Awards.

The American Business Awards are the nation’s premier business awards program. All organizations operating in the U.S.A. are eligible to submit nominations – public and private, for-profit and non-profit, large and small.

More than 3,000 nominations from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted this year for consideration in a wide range of categories, but out of all the entries for IT Department of the Year, Road America has gone home a winner.

The past year has proved to be an especially busy one for the Road America IT Department  providing numerous innovative and challenging endeavors.  In January of 2011, the Road America IT Department, in collaboration with AT&T, launched a pilot test of LocateMe™, which uses AT&T’s Phone Locator Service to pinpoint the addresses where calls originate. Applicable on both land and wireless lines across all major U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Metro PCS, and now fully operational, LocateMe™ can locate over 90% of the Road America customer base. In the summer of 2011, AT&T published a case study to highlight the shared success of this project.

In 2011, following the success of LocateMe, the Road America IT Department started developing a wireless roadside assistance application for simultaneous launch across all major smart phone platforms using the same source code. Their IT Department knew an effective app would allow customers to directly request service without contacting call-center agents.  Using Rapid Application Development (RAD) techniques the team developed Drive On™ and, by the fall of 2011, the app became available in web stores for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry.

Finalists were chosen by more than 140 business professionals nationwide during preliminary judging in April and May.  Over 10 specialized judging committees determined Stevie Award placements from among the Finalists during final judging.

The Power of Prevention

How Properly Caring for a Vehicle and Keeping Emergency Supplies on Hand can be Your Best Asset

Expect the unexpected:  A phrase that so many of us hear, but don’t truly take to heart.  However, that three word warning is one that can make all the difference on long trips in the family car.  Getting stuck in the middle of nowhere is a frightening and stressful situation, but by following these tips you can stay safe and get back on the road before you know it.

First, the essentials.  Jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, cell phone charger, flat tire fixer, and, of course, your insurance info and vehicle registration are items that are essential for even your daily commute to work and back.  However, don’t forget to keep the following items especially for long trips:

  • Fire extinguisher
  • Extra oil
  • Flashlight
  • GPS and map
  • First Aid Kit – including bandages, burn cream, anitbacterial ointment, and pain reliever
  • Food and Water – long shelf life food like protein bars
  • Blanket
  • Tow Rope
  • Life Hammer

Also, don’t forget to keep up with general preventative maintenance like checking tire pressure and condition (including the spare) and changing your oil according to your owner’s manual (usually every 3,000-5,000 miles depending on year, make, and model of your car).
On a monthly basis, be sure to check:

  • Transmission Fluid
  • Brakes and Brake Fluid
  • Antifreeze Coolant
  • Oil and Filter
  • All Lights (including headlights, brake lights, and emergency lights)

When you change your oil or have it done by a professional, be sure the following items are checked:

  • Battery and Cables
  • Belts
  • Exhaust
  • Fuel Filter
  • Air Filter
  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Wiper Blades

Back To School

Now that the roads are busier, there are a few important tips to keep in mind that will keep you and your family safe while driving.

Now that kids are back in school, accidents in residential areas are more common, but most are preventable.  Be sure to slow down when driving through neighborhoods and school zones and stay alert before and after school hours.  Most walkers aren’t injured at intersections, rather the majority of pedestrian related accidents happen “mid-block.”  So, be sure to watch for kids who cross outside of crosswalks as well.  And when it comes to crosswalks, remember to give pedestrians the right of way.  In most states, it’s the law.

As the roads are busier every morning and afternoon, and as more children are walking through neighborhoods and school zones, it is especially important to refrain from texting while driving.  Check with your local law officials as more and more states have passed laws against the use of cell phones while driving all togeher, whether talking or texting.  The use of cell phones, even hands-free, is a distraction that causes many accidents each year.  Remember that driving an automobile requires your undivided attention, and consider if you really have to answer that call or text while driving.

Road America 1ST Runner-Up in 2012 Call Center Excellence Awards

Miami, FL – June 12, 2012 – Road America has been recognized as the first runner up in the category of Best in Class Call Centers (over 200 staff) in the 2012 Call Center Excellence Awards.

Out of more than 40 entries in its category, Road America stood out to the judges with its improvements in productivity while maintaining consistently high customer satisfaction scores. Specifically, Road America was able to reduce average call handling time by nearly 30 seconds during the past 12 months, while maintaining a complaint ratio of less than 1%, and customer satisfaction rates of over 90% based on customer surveys.
